The Sermon of Fatima Zahra (P)

Editor's Note:The following text is an English translation of the Speech of the daughter of the Prophet of Islam, presented in a mosque in Medina, approximately 14 centuries ago. The sermon is given in defense of her individual rights to inheritance, howerver it carries stong philosophical and social discourses. On the other hand the sermon can be envisaged as an expression of women's human rights in terms of political freedoms including a women's right to freedom of expression and the economic rights of women in terms of their access to inheritance and resources.Today the teachings of this woman and her lifestyle have profoundly influenced Muslim women, her words seem to be even more meaningful in these turbulent times. ------ ****** ------ "Praise be to Allah for the blessings He has bestowed; thanks be to Him for all that He has revealed and all that He has provided from His bounty. Thanks be to Him for His ample blessings and the perfect gifts He has continuously provided. Their number is too high to count, too vast to measure; it is beyond comprehension. He summoned [his creatures] to bring about an increase [in His blessings] by being grateful for their perpetuity. He is praiseworthy for His beneficence; with the invitation to this blessing, bounties will be doubled. "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, the One, with no partner. The interpretation of these words effects sincere devotion; hearts guarantee its continuation; its logic illuminates the mind. He cannot be perceived with eyes, nor described with tongues, nor can His being be encompassed by the imagination. He originated things not from anything that existed previously and created them without existing models. He created them with His power and dispersed them according to His will. He did not create them out of need nor shape them for benefit, but to establish His wisdom, bring attention to obedience to Him, manifest His might, lead His creatures to humbly worship Him and exalt His decrees. He made reward for obedience to Him and punishment for disobedience to Him to deter His creatures from His Wrath and gather them into His Paradise. "I bear witness my father, Muhammad(S), is His servant and messenger. He chose him before sending him, named him before creating him, selected him before appointing him, at the time when creatures were concealed in the unseen, submerged in dreadful fear and bound to the ultimate void. Allah, the Exalted, has knowledge of what is to come, encompasses all that will come to pass, and has knowledge of the sites of all which will transpire. Allah has sent him as fulfillment of His Mandate, a resolution to the execution of His Decree, and to carry out the orders of His Omnipotence. "[The Prophet] found the nations divided in their faiths; prostrated before their fires, worshipping their idols, denying Allah despite knowing Him. Thus, Allah illuminated their darkness with Muhammad(S) , removed the doubts from their hearts and cleared the clouds from before their eyes. So, he arose to guide the people, saved them from going astray, gave them sight after blindness, guided them to the true religion and called them to the straight path. "Allah then took him back in a grasp of mercy, preference and generosity. So, Muhammad(S), from the burden of this world, is now in comfort, surrounded by devoted angels, in the satisfaction of the Merciful Lord and the nearness of the Powerful King. The praise of Allah be upon my father, His prophet, the one trusted with the revelation, the chosen one, the best from among His creatures and the one who pleases Him. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. [Fatima(AS) then turned to those assembled and said:] "You are the servants of Allah, appointed to enforce His commands and prohibitions, the bearers of His religion and revelation, entrusted by Allah, His messengers to the nations. His rightful [chosen] leader is among you; He brought 9 covenant to you; and He left behind a guard for you--the eloquent book of Allah, the truthful Our'an, a brilliant light, a shining ray. Its insight is clear; its secrets are revealed; its signs are manifest; and its followers are blessed by it. Following it leads to satisfaction [of Allah]; heeding it leads to your salvation. With it, the brilliant proofs of Allah are realized, His intentions explained, what He prohibited is warned against, His signs presented; His attributes [which people are encouraged to follow] made apparent; His allowances granted; His laws written. "Allah made faith a purification for you from polytheism; prayer an elevation from arrogance, zakaf a purification for the self and [a source of] prosperity, fasting a confirmation of sincerity, pilgrimage an establishment of religion, justice a harmony of the hearts. Obeying us brings order to the nation, our leadership is a safeguard from disunity. Jihad brings honor to Islam, patience is a help to being granted reward, enjoining good is for public welfare, kindness to parents is a safeguard from wrath. Maintaining relations with kin increases your numbers, the law of retribution reduces bloodshed. Fulfillment of vows is a way toward forgiveness, fairness [in business dealings] with weights and measures changes the custom of shortchanging people. Banning the use of alcohol elevates one from filth, avoiding slander is a barrier from damnation. Abandoning theft brings about integrity, and He forbid polytheism so that one can be devoted to Him only. "Thus, 'Fear Allah as He should be feared and die not, except in a state of submission.' [Our'an 3:102]. "Obey Allah in that which He has commanded you to do and that which He has forbidden, 'for surely those who fear Allah the most among His servants are those who have knowledge.' [Our'an 35:28] "O people! Know that I am Fatima and my father is Muhammad (S). I say this repeatedly and begin with it now. I do not say what I say mistakenly, nor do I speak unjustly. An apostle has come to you from among yourselves and it grieves him that you should suffer. He is worried about you and he is kind and merciful to the believers. If you know and recognize him, you will realize that he is my father; such a father as none of your women have had. He is the brother of my cousin [Ali, AS]; such a brother as none of you men have been. How fortunate are those who are his kin, peace be upon him and his descendants! "He conveyed the message openly along with the warning. He towered over the path of the polytheists, struck them down and silenced them, while inviting all to the way of his Lord with wisdom and good counsel. He destroyed their idols and defeated their champions; until they were routed and turned their backs and fled. The night revealed its dawn, the truth proclaimed itself. The leader of faith spoke and the evil cries were silenced. The curtain of hypocrisy fell and the knots of disbelief and discord were loosened. "Amidst a group of starved ones, your mouths opened with pledges of devotion. You were on the brink of a pit of fire, like a paltry sip of water, like prey for the greedy, like a smoldering stick In the hands of one in haste, like a footprint. You used to drink from puddles and eat animal hides and leaves. You were detestable outcasts, always in fear of abduction from those around you. Yet Allah rescued you through Muhammad (S), after all that had occurred; after he was confronted by the most brutal of men, the Arab wolves and the rebellious of the People of the Book. Whenever they lit the fires of war, Allah extinguished it. Whenever the horns of the devil appeared or the polytheists opened their mouths in defiance, he [the prophet, S] would strike at them with his brother [Ali, AS], who would not return until he had trampled them under the soles of his feet and extinguished the flames with his sword. "[Ali] exhausts himself in the way of Allah, strives in the way of Allah, is near to the Messenger of Allah (S), a master among Allah's worshippers, hard-working, a sincere advisor and earnest, while you are living in luxury, feeling safe and secure, waiting for the wheels of fate to turn upon us-awaiting the news. You retreat at the time of battle and flee from fighting. "When Allah has chosen for His Prophet the abode of the prophets and the final resting place of the pure, the thorns of hypocrisy appeared amongst you and the garment of faith was shredded. The silent one from among the misguided spoke out; the dormant one came to the forefront; the spoiled, fattenE:d camel of the wrongdoers brayed and strode into your courts. The Devil stuck his head out from his place of hiding and called upon you. He found you responsive to his call and ready to fall for his deceptions. He provoked you and found you quick to respond to him. He lit the fire of rage under you and found you easily angered. You branded other than your own camels and you approached other than your own watering places. And this while the era of the Prophet (S) was still near; the gash was still wide open; the wound had not yet healed and the Messenger (S) was not yet buried! "You justified your actions as aiming to prevent discord. Surely they have fallen into discord already and, indeed, Hell surrounds the unbelievers! How incredible of you! How could you do such a thing? How dare you? For Allah's Book is still among you; its affairs are apparent; its rules are obvious; its signs shine brightly; its restrictions are plain and its commands are evident. Yet, indeed, you have cast it behind your backs! Is it that you detest it!? Or do you wish to rule according to something else? What an evil exchange this would be for the wrongdoers! And if anyone desires a religion other than Islam [submission to Allah], if will never be accepted of him; and in the hereafter, he will be in the ranks of those who have lost.. [Our'an 3:85] "You didn't even wait until the emotional turmoil subsided and the situation was under control. Instead, you fed its flames and fanned its embers and answered the call of the deceptive Devil. You extinguished the light of the indisputable religion and smothered the traditions of the pure Prophet (S). On the pretense of sipping froth, you secretly drank the milk; you proceeded toward his family and children with harmful intent. We tolerate of you that which is like being stabbed in the abdomen with daggers, yet now you claim that there is no inheritance for us! Is it the law of the days of ignorance that you seek to follow? Who is better than Allah to govem the people convinced of the Tnrth? "Don't you know? Yes, it's as evident as the shining sun to you that I am his daughter. 0 Muslims, willi be deprived of my inheritance!? "Oh, son of Abu Quhafal Is it in the Book of Allah that you inherit from your father and I do not inherit from my father? Surely I you have come up with an unheard-of thing! Do you intentionally abandon the Book of Allah and cast it behind your back? Do you not read where It says: And Sulayman was Dawood's heir...' [Qur'an 27:16] and where It says about Zakariya: …So give me an heir as from thyself; one that will inherit from me and from the posterity of Yaqoob...' [Qur'an 19:5-6] and He says in the Book of Allah: "And render to the kindred their due rights...' [Qur'an 17:26] and He says: Allah directs you as regards your children's [inheritance]; to the male 8 porlion equal to that of two females...' [Our'an4:11] and He says: '...If he leaves any goods, that he make a bequest to parents and next of kin, according to reasonable usage; this is due from the God-fearing. / [Qur'an 2:180] "You claim that I have no share and that I do not inherit from my father! Did Allah specify a verse for you from which he excluded my father? Or do you say that people of two faiths do not inherit from each other? Are not my father and I of one faith? Or are you more knowledgeable in the specifics and generalities of the Our'an than my father and my cousin? "So go ahead and take it! It's bridled and saddled. It will meet you on the Day of Gathering; Allah is the best of judges, Muhammad(S) is the claimant and the date is the Day of Rising. At that Hour, the wrongdoers will lose and it will not benefit you to regret [your actions] then. There is a time span for every message and you will soon know who will be inflicted with punishment that will humiliate him and who will be faced with everlasting punishment. [Fatima then turned toward the Ansars, the helpers of Medina, and said:] "Oh you people of intellect, you strong supporters of the nation, you who have embraced Islam I What is this shortcoming in defending my right? What is this indifference toward the injustice being done to me? Did not the Messenger of Allah (S), my father, use to say: "Man is preserved through his children." How quickly you have acted against him and how soon you have plotted against us! You have the capability to help me in my attempt and power to influence my plea and goal. "Do you say that Muhammad (S) has died? Surely this is a great misfortune; its anguish is endless; it is a wide and gaping wound which can't be healed. The earth has become dark in his absence, the stars were eclipsed by what has befallen him. Hopes were extinguished, mountains succumbed and sanctity was violated. All sense of respect vanished at his death. And this, by Allah, is the ultimate affliction and the great calamity! There is no affliction like it, nor will one like it strike in the future. The Book of Allah, Excellent and Praised is He, has declared in your courtyards, during your moming and evening gatherings, calling and shouting, in the reading and reciting of it, that this has happened to previous prophets and messengers of Allah. It is a final decree and a prophecy fulfilled: 'Muhammad is not but an Apostle, many were the apostles that passed away before him. If he died or was slain, will you then turn back on your heels? If any did turn back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah; but Allah (on the other hand) will reward those who serve him in gratitude.' [Our'an 3:144] "Oh you children of Oaylah [the ancestor of the Aws and Khazraj tribes]! Should the one who is the rightful heir of my father have injustice inflicted upon him? You are able to see and hear me, you are all gathered around me, you hear my plea and you are involved in this affair. You are numerous and well-equipped; you have your weapons and your shields. The call reaches you, but you do not answer! The cry reaches you, but you do not come to my aid! "And this while you are known for your bravery in the cause of truth, for your goodness and piety, the chosen ones, the select. You fought the Arabs and you tolerated pain and exhaustion; you challenged the nations and confronted their champions. You never made a move without our command, you were in complete obedience to us, until Islam triumphed, the results of our struggle were realized [lit.; the milk began to flow] and the arrogance of polytheism was brought to its knees. The turbulence of falsehood quieted and the fires of infidelity died down, the call to anarchy subsided and the system of faith was established. So why, after enlightenment, have you become confused and, after working openly, do you conceal yourselves? Why, after advancing, have you regressed and become polytheists after true faith? 'Will you not fight people who violated their oaths, plotted to expel the Apostle and took the awessive by being the first (to assau") you? Do you fear them? Nay, it is Allah lI\I11om you should more justly fear, if you believe!' [Our'an 9:13] "But I see that you are inclined to easy living and have distanced yourself from he who has more right to decide your affairs. You have isolated yourself in meekness and attained your goal of material ease. You rejected that which you have understood and spit out that which you have ingested. If you and everyone on earth become rejecters, Allah is free of all needs and worthy of all praise! "Surely I have said all I have said in full knowledge that you intend to forsake me and knowing the betrayal harbored in your hearts. It is but an overflowing of the soul, the venting of fury, that which my psyche cannot tolerate, an unburdening of the chest. The proof was presented. "Wrap it [the caliphate] up and load it on the back of a camel with a wounded hoof and everlasting shame, marked with the wrath of Allah, forever disgraced. It is joined to 'the Fire of Allah, kindled (to ablaze) which mounts (right) to the heart.' [Our'an 104:6-7] "Allah witnesses what you do and soon the unjust will know which turn they will take. I am the daughter of a warner, with news of a severe punishment. So, do as you will and we will" [So, Abu Bakr responded:] “Oh daughter of the Messenger of Allah, your father was kind, generous and merciful with the Believers and he was a great punishm9nt and torment for the unbelievers. If we compare, we would surely find that he was your father, and not anyone else's; the brother of your husband, not of any other man's, he preferred him over all his friends and [AII,AS] helped him in every important matter. No one loves you except the fortunate, no one hates you except the wretched. You are the blessed progeny of Allah's Messenger, the chosen ones, our guides to goodness, our way to Paradise. And you, the select of women, the daughter of the best of the prophets, truthful in your words, of abundant wisdom, you shall not be driven away from your rights and no one questions your truthfulness. "By Allah, I haven't abandoned the Prophet's counsei, I have not acted except with his permission, and the leader of the tribe does not lie to his own [people]. Allph is my witness, which is sufficient. I have heard the Messenger of Allah say: "We, the prophets, do not inherit, nor are we inherited from; not gold, nor silver, nor real estate, nor property, but we leave behind the book, wisdom, knowledge and prophethood. And whatever belongings we leave behind are entrusted to the leader to dispose of as he sees fit. "That which you request, we are using for weapons and horses so that the Muslims can fight, struggle against the unbelievers, to confront the wicked rebels. That [policy] is based on the consensus of the Muslims and not my idea alone. I did not compel others to accept my own opinions. This is my situation and this is the property; it is yours to do with as you wish. It shall not be concealed from you, nor will it be kept for someone other than you. You are the mistress of your father's nation and the blessed tree of your descendants. Your property will not be usurped because of your high standing, nor will your name be defamed. I will carry out your decision with whatever I possess. So, in this, do you accept that I violate your father's [will], peace be upon him and his family?" [So Fatima (AS) said:] "Glory be to Allah! The Messenger (S) did not turn away from Allah's book, nor did he oppose His commands, rather he followed its decrees and adhered to its chapters. So do you unite in this betrayal and use lies 8S a justification? This, after his death, is similar to the calamities wished upon him during his lifetime. This is Allah's Book, a fair judge and the ultimate word and says: 'one that will inherit from me and from the posterity of Yaqoob...' [Our'an 19:5-6] "How are you doing this morning, daughter of the Messenger of Allah?" [Fatima, after praising Allah and praying for her father, said:] "I have come to resent your wond and detest your men. I have cast them away after testing them, despised them after examining them. Shame on the dull swords [these weak men], on the trifling after serious effort, the striking of rocks and the cracking of spears, the foolish judgements and mistaken desires. How bad are [the works] they have put forward! The wrath of Allah is upon them and in torment they will abide. "Without doubt, they have put the noose around their own necks, I lay this burden on their shoulders, I thrust the shame of it upon them. May the unjust tribe be cut off, impotent and annihilated! Woe unto them! "How they have moved it away from the foundations of the Message and the fundamentals of prophethood and guidance, the place of the descent of the [Angel Gabriel] and the experts in the affairs of the wond and religion. Surely that is the clear loss. Why were they hostile to Abul Hassan (Ali, AS)? "They were hostile, by Allah, because of his unbiased sword, his indifference to his own death, his deadly assaults, his making examples of them, his fury for the sole sake of Allah, Exalted is His Name. "By Allah, if they kept themselves from assuming the reins of power [lit., the guide rope of the camel], which Allah's Messenger entrusted to him, he would have held it and moved along with them smoothly. [The carriel] would not have been harmed in the least and its passengers would not have been shaken up. He would have taken them to a pure, quenching spring, overflowing its banks, but not muddy at its sides. "He would have brought them back satiated and advised them confidentially and openly. He would not have adorned himself with wealth, nor would he take for the sake of wondly gain, save just enough to quench his thirst and overcome his hunger. The abstinent would have been distinguished from the desirous and the truthful from the liar. 'Had the people of the towns believed and feared Allah, We should indeed have opened out to them [all kinds of blessings] from Heaven and Earth; but they rejected [the truth] and We brought them to book for their misdeeds. ' [Qur'an 7:96] have broken the falcon's largest feathers. but the weak feathers have betrayed you. "This son of Abu Quhafa [Abu Bakr] is robbing me of my father's gift, the livelihood of my two sons. He has publicized his animosity toward me and I found him most stubborn in his speech to me. Even those who said they would support me [the Aws and Khazraj] denied me,' and neither did the Immigrants [muhajirah] maintain their ties with me. The people covered their eyes and looked away from me. There was no one to defend [what is right] nor prevent [what is wrong]. "I left home full of rage and I returned unwillingly [without result]. You humbled yourself the day you laid down your sword. You have attacked wolves, but now you lay on the ground. You have not stopped those who have spoken [against me], nor protected me from wrong. I have no options. I wish I had died rather have suffered this humiliation, before this disgrace. "Allah forgive me for the hostile way I'm talking to you. Upon every sunrise, woe is me! My source of support has died and my source of strength has become feeble. I complain to my father and I turn to my Lord. Oh Allah, you are the Mighty and the Most Powerful! You inflict the most severe harm and punishment!" [The Commander of the Faithful (AS) said:] "The calamity is not upon you; the calamity is upon your enemies. Cease your anger [grudge], oh daughter of the Purest, the remaining [link to] the prophethood. I am not negligent of my faith and, to the best of my ability, I haven't erred. If you desire [worldly] security, well, your livelihood is secure. Your protector is trustworthy. What is in trust for you is better than what has been deprived you. Keep Allah in mind [be patient]." I[She said:] "I am content to rely on Allah and I will restrain myself." Hazrat Fatima's Speech to the Women of the Immigrants and Helpers Suwaid bin Ghaflah said: When Hazrat Fatima became ill, meaning with the illness that was the cause of her death, the women of the Immigrants and Helpers came to visit her and asked her, and 'And Sulayman was Dawood's heir...' [Qur'an 27:16] "So, He, Glory be to Him, clarified what was to be distributed from the shares [of inheritance], decreed the amounts of inheritance, made lawful portions for the males and females, to counter the claim of the wrongdoers and to remove doubts and ambiguities. "No, you yourselves have made up something! For me, splendid patience; I can only seek help from Allah against what you claim." [Abu Bakr responds:] "Allah said the truth, the Messenger said the truth, and his daughter said the truth. Surely, you are the source of wisdom, the center of guidance and mercy, a pillar of religion and the fountainhead of proof [of Allah's existence]. I don't shun the truth of what you say and I don't deny your argument. But these Muslims [standing] between you and me have thrust [the leadership] upon me, like a chain around my neck. It is with their agreement that I took what I took, without arrogance, oppression or selfishness, and they are witnesses to that." [Fatima turned toward the people and said:] “Oh you people, who hurry to hear falsehood, who keep their eyes shut to corrupt and vain deeds, do you not contemplate the Qur'an or do you have locks on your hearts? No, but the wrongness of your deeds has left its mark on your hearts, it has seized your hearing and sight. How badly you have interpreted [the Qur'an] and what a bad path you have pointed out [to him]. How evil is that which you have taken as advice from him. You will find this, by Allah, a heavy burden and its outcome disastrous. When the cover is removed and the harm behind it becomes clear and that which you have not reckoned on will come from Allah, the wrongdoers will be in loss." Fatima Returns to Her Home and Speaks with Her Husband Then she (AS) returned [home]. The Commander of the Faithful (AS) was expecting her return to him and was waiting for her to appear. When she had settled down, in her home, she said to the Commander of the Faithful (AS): “Oh, son of Abi Talib, have you considered yourself as one of the children? You stayed at home like someone under suspicion. You And the wrongdoers of this [generation]; the results of their deeds will soon overtake them [too], and they will never be able to frustrate [Our Plan]!' [Our'an 39:51] "Indeed, come to hear! During my life, I have seen amazing things. If you are surprised [by this], you should be surprised by what they say. I wish I knew what they have used as proof. What foundation have they relied on, which rope have they grasped? Upon whose progeny have they encroached and dominated? Evil, indeed, is the master and evil the companion! "By Allah, they have exchanged the strong feathers for the weak feathers, the capable for the impotent. Shame on those who [mistakenlYJ think they are doing good, for surely, they are the corrupt, but they do not realize itl 'Woe unto them! Is he who guides towards truth more worthy to be followed, or he who finds not guidance PJimself] unless he is guided? What then, is the matter with you? How do you judge?' [Our'an 10:35] "Upon my life, [the seedsJ have already been implanted, so wait until it bears fruit. Fill your buckets with the blood of imbeciles and fatal venom. Then the wrongdoers shall be in loss 1 Those who follow will realize the consequence of what the predecessors have established. Reconcile yourselves to your world and be certain of sedition. Prepare for tidings of a sharp sword, the attack of an tyrant, total chaos and the exploitation of oppressors who will render your plunder worthless and cut you down with swords. "Alas! What a pityl Where will this lead? You have been blinded. Can I force you to do something to which you are averse?" Suwaid ibn Ghaflah said: The women of the Immigrants and Helpers, after hearing this speech, reported it to their husbands. After this, a group of the elders of the Immigrants and Helpers went to her to apologize and said: "Oh Mistress of Women! If Abul Hassan had clarified this matter before we pledged ourselves to Abu Bakr, we would not have chosen anyone other than Alii" (She said:) "Leave me alone! Get lost! After committing this big sin, don't come here and apologize insincerely, because you have no excuse!"
